Urban Sunbathing

There is only one official naked sunbathing area in the whole of London, and that is for men only. However, many naturists take the opportunity to sunbathe naked in the long grass in late summer in the various parks and green spaces around the capital. Be careful in the large parks which fall under the control of the Royal Parks Constabulary, as they are likely to take a dim view.

Naturism and the Law

Technically, it is not illegal to be naked in public in England, as long as you do not intend to cause offence. In practice, the law is not straightforward, but you can check the British Naturism website for further information and discussion.

Gay Sunbathing

Gay men have enjoyed naked sunbathing in a number of locations around the capital for many generations. Ham Fields, Whipps Cross, Hackney Marshes, Hampstead Heath. These locations are very unofficial and are sometimes troubled by the intolerant attitudes of local residents and police, although the situation is improving.
